We carry two different species of Helichrysum oils, which can be used almost interchangeably. Here are the main differences:
• gymnocephalum: Good for pain, bruising, and inflammation. Not as good for open wounds.
• italicum: Does the above as well as wound healing and nerve regeneration. This one is best for major injuries or for quicker healing.
Helichrysum gymnocephalum will help treat mouth and gum issues including gingivitis and periodontitis. It also has been known to help treat cold sores.
Can help treat gastritis. It also will help you treat ulcers and other stress issues involving your stomach.
History: The plant has been used for centuries when treating incontinence, as well as urinary tract issues. In Africa, the roots were used to soothe coughs. A tea was made of the leaves and used to treat a wide variety of issues including liver trouble, joint aches, skin problems, and insect bites. The plant has also been used to treat gingivitis.

Blends well with: Clary Sage, Clove Bud, Orange, Lemon, Lavender, and other citrus and floral oils.
Ways to use: You will need to blend with a carrier oil before using topically. A general guideline is 4-8 drops in ½ teaspoon of carrier oil for adult topical use. Once you have tried it, you will know if you need to blend more or less. A general guideline for blend rates for children can be found here:
Gentle massage a drop or two, in a carrier oil, into area above a broken bone or muscle injury, as well as arthritic joints.
Diffuse 2 drops Helichrysum gymnocephalum and 4 drops Myrrh to ease mucusy coughs.
Blend 1 drop Helichrysum gymnocephalum and 3 drops Red Mandarin with 1/2 teaspoon of carrier oil and use as a moisturizer for dry skin.
• ¼ cup Shea Butter
• 1 capsule Evening Primrose Oil
• 15 drops Birch Bark
• 10 drops German Chamomile
• 5 drops Sweet Marjoram
• 10 drops Lavender
• 7 drops Helichrysum gymnocephalum
Warm the shea butter in a double-boiler over low heat, until it has just melted. Remove from heat. Add Evening Primrose Oil and essential oils directly to your storage container, then slowly pour in the liquified shea butter. Cap and label the container and set aside until the balm has thickened. Takes approximately 24 hours.
Use formula judiciously. Massage a pea sized amount into affected area to relieve stiffness and/or pain. Store away from heat and light. Discard after 1 year. Can use up to 3 times a day. Works really well for arthritis and for sports related muscle injuries.
• 2 drops Helichrysum gymnocephalum
• 1 drop Lavender
• 1 drop Carrot Seed
• 1 tablespoon Baking Soda
• 1 1/2 teaspoons Water
In a small bowl, mix all ingredients until a velvety, watery paste forms. Dip the pads of your fingers into the paste and slowly and lightly begin to massage your entire face, throat, and upper chest, using small, circular motions. Do not use much pressure -- let the baking soda granules do the exfoliation work. Continue to dip fingers into the paste as often as needed in order to cover skin with a thin coat. Takes about 10 minutes to complete. Rinse well. Use no more than twice a week. Follow with a moisturizer. Do not use on sunburned, windburned, or irritated skin.
