Breaking the Habit: 6 Common Face-Washing Mistakes

Our skin says a lot about us. With our skin being the largest organ on our bodies, it's important to treat it with the care, dedication, and respect it deserves by practicing a good skincare routine. Now, washing your face may seem like one of the most straightforward routines in the book, but there are actually many skincare habits that could be doing more harm than good for your skin. By steering clear of these six face-washing no-no's, you can invest in your skin and create a healthier complexion.

1. Using the Wrong Skin Cleanser:

Using the Wrong Skin Cleanser

When it comes to choosing a face wash, people naturally tend to look for “foaming” cleansers with the hope that a sudsy wash means better results. However, many foaming facial cleansers have been shown to be less effective and more damaging than gel products. This is because foaming cleansers can actually strip your skin of its more natural oils, leading to redness and irritation.

Instead of washing your face with traditional foaming face washes, we recommend using a hydrating gel formula. This product effectively removes makeup and impurities without drying out the skin, making it a great option for all skin types. Simply massage a pea-sized amount of product into dry skin, and rinse with water or a washcloth.

2. Speeding Through Your Routine

Busy schedules are a grim reality in our modern world, but that doesn’t mean your skin should have to suffer. While it may be tempting to rush through your skincare routine so that you can jump back into the fray, your skin will definitely thank you for pressing the pause button.

Instead of treating your routine as a quick rinse-and-go activity, allow your cleanser some time to work its magic. After applying the gel product to your face, wet your fingertips and massage them into the skin to create an emulsifying effect. This will give your cleanser the chance to breakdown the oil, grime, and germs on your skin, leading to clean, soft, and healthy results.

3. Turning Up the Heat

While hot water may give you that spa-like experience that you’re looking for in your skincare routine, higher water temperatures can actually have adverse effects on your skin. Hot water strips your skin of its natural oils, causing your skin to become dry and out of balance. This can lead to acne flares, skin irritation, and excessive sebum production.

Our recommendation? Try using only lukewarm water during your face washing routine. To do this, simply test the temperature of the water by running your wrist under the faucet and adjusting until the water is cool and comfortable.

4. Washing too Often (Or Not Enough)

Washing too Often (Or Not Enough)

If you have acne-prone skin, it may be tempting to break out your face cleanser several times a day in an attempt to curb any flare ups. However, overwashing can cause your skin to dry out and produce too much oil — leading to irritation and breakouts. On the other hand, washing irregularly or only at nighttime to remove makeup or daily grime can also prove to be detrimental to your complexion.

The recommended schedule for washing your face is once in the morning before applying makeup or products, and at night before bed. This daily routine will allow your skin to rest between washing while also keeping it clean, clear, and healthy.

5. Skipping the Toner

The general consensus is that your routine should contain three parts: cleanse, tone, and moisturize. Toners help to restore the skin’s natural balance by acting as an astringent and antimicrobial agent. Instead of dishing out for expensive over-the-counter toning products, consider going the natural way with skin-loving essential oils.

Need some recommendations? Try diluting these essential oils with a carrier oil, and apply them to your face after cleansing to support healthy, soft, and glowing skin.

6. Forgetting to Moisturize

While it may be tempting to rush out the door after a good cleansing, it’s important to give back to your skin with a good facial moisturizer. Not only will moisturizing lock in hydration and improve skin texture, but it can also minimize the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and dark spots for glowing, softer, and more youthful skin. After cleansing and toning, apply our Tohi Sacred Skin moisturizer to the face and neck in the morning and night.
