We always recommend diluting essential oils with a carrier oil like Fractionated Coconut Oil (FCO)  when applied topically on the skin.  Benefits of safe dilution include:

  • Increased absorption into the skin

Essential oils are highly volatile substances.  If applied directly to the skin, a portion of the oil will not be absorbed due to evaporation.  Carrier oils prevent essential oils from evaporating while on the skin, which maximizes absorption time.

  • Prevention of skin irritation or sensitivity to the Essential Oil

Depending on your skin sensitivity, you may experience skin irritation when applying essential oils topically.  Proper dilution reduces the likelihood of skin irritation when an oil is used topically.  Continued use of an essential oil that has not been diluted properly can lead to a developed sensitivity to the oil.  Even if an oil is not causing a reaction when applied undiluted, irreversible damage may occur through repeated exposure.

  • Maximizes the effectiveness of the Essential Oil

Essential oils are so pure and potent, they are intended to be diluted.  Contrary to popular belief, using an oil undiluted does not necessarily mean you will receive better results.  Unless you are using an undiluted oil under the supervision of a trained professional, you will receive maximum benefits from an oil if it is diluted appropriately.  You will also get more applications out of one bottle if you dilute the essential oil when applying topically.

Like it but not the pump--some waste

good oil
The oil is great, price was lower than most and I'd give it 5 stars, but the bottle leaked. I had read that on the other reviews and it's true. The Pump needs to go...put a regular lid on it and send the pump separately. I probably won't use the pump anyway. Yes, I'd recommend it and hope the next time I buy it, the pump will be gone. :)

Pump dispenser is lame
I LOVE the oil but am not crazy about the pump dispenser. Definitely prefer the flip top dispenser, which makes pouring the oil much easier and less wasteful. ;)

Absorbs nicely and makes a great carrier oil. Just be careful pumping it out, since it comes out very easy or you'll end up with more than you need.

Whats the difference between using this and regular coconut oil ?
A shopper on Oct 26, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Fractionated coconut oil remains liquid at all stages. I use it as a carrier oil for other essential oils. We also used it on my baby granddaughter's exzema -- worked great!

Some others also say this:
Fractionated coconut oil is also marketed as MCT oil and liquid coconut oil, but fundamentally these are all the same product. Its uses include skin care and cooking.
What is the preferred method for preparing dilutions, in advance or as needed? Does the dilution lose its essential oil potency or evaporate if made in advance in a small jar?
A shopper on Oct 26, 2017
BEST ANSWER: For adult topical application, the recommended starting ratio is 1/2 tsp of carrier oil for every 1-3 drops of essential oil. For more dilution rate click here: https://www.rockymountainoils.com/dilution-rate/

The dilution of the blends with the carrier oil does not hinder the therapeutic value of the single essential oils in the blend.

RMO Team

A shopper on Sep 9, 2017
BEST ANSWER: You can definitely dilute these blends. We recommend diluting before applying topically. For adult topical application, the recommended starting ratio is 1 tsp of carrier oil for every 3-4 drops of essential oil. We provide a great dilution guide on our website as well as topical information for children:
