Frankincense Varieties

Our Frankincense Essential Oils vary in price because each is a different variety of Frankincense. All three share similar beneficial properties, while the main difference lies in the strength and potency of the properties which are determined by their chemical constituents.

  • Frankincense, Carterii’s aroma is like the other varieties being balsamic, rich, warm, slightly spicy, sweet, and woody but also has a slightly citrusy top note.

  • Frankincense, Sacred’s aroma is like the other varieties being balsamic, rich, warm, slightly spicy, sweet, and woody with its sweet woodiness standing out most. Frankincense, Sacred is regarded as the most therapeutic and highly sought-after Frankincense oil in the world.

  • Frankincense Serrata’s aroma is like the other varieties being balsamic, rich, warm, slightly spicy, sweet, and woody but has more earthy notes.

Many believe Carterii and Serrata are the same because the seeds that are planted are identical. However, depending on the geographical area and climate in which they are grown, combined with the pH level of the soil and other growing factors, the resulting plant is strikingly different. Two distinct species of Frankincense are born from the same seed. Because the therapeutic properties are similar, all three varieties of Frankincense that we provide allow for a diversity of strength and potency for varying price points.

VERY NICE
I am so pleased that I ordered this Frankincense. I have been using another brand for a few years and was trying to replace it with a Frankincense that smelled good. This one is wonderful! I couldn't be more pleased to have found it. I use it daily.

What's the difference between the three kinds of frankincense oil?
Terri K on Apr 17, 2017
Can you take frankincense orally by mouth, I read a couple drops under the tongue helps immune system?
jason o on Mar 2, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Rocky Mountain Oils feels that essential oils are very potent and can be dangerous if not used correctly. All of our oils are 100% pure, natural, and authentic. They are of the quality to ingest. However, we cannot provide dosing suggestions or directions on how to ingest if you choose to do so. If you do choose to ingest the oils, we suggest consulting an Aromatherapist or trusted health professional for guidance.

Thanks!
-RMO Team.
In my research I read that scacra and carterri are essentially the same species. Insight? What to purchase?? Should I buy one for diffusing and another for body application?? Looking for peaceful aroma and healing properties
Monica M on Feb 7, 2018
BEST ANSWER: All varieties of Frankincense essential oils do share similar properties and therapeutic functions. The difference is in the growing conditions and the regions they come from. All three varieties that we carry will smell different from each other as well as have different dominant constituents. This is due to a slight variance in chemical makeup brought on by the different growing conditions. Some examples to share would be that Frankincense, Sacred is high in alpha-pinene. This is a great component for skin care. Then you have Frankincense, Serrata, which is higher in alpha-thujene making it a better option for an uplifting mood. Frankincense, Carterii has a high d-limonene which is great for general pain relief of muscles and joints.

However, Because the therapeutic properties are similar, choosing a variety of Frankincense depends on the aroma, the dominant constituent of the oil as well as the price point you prefer.

Thanks-
RMO Team
I noticed some of the blended oils are diluted with coconut oil. Is the frankincense also diluted?
Sarah C on Jun 11, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Our single essential oils such as Frankincense are just the essential oils and do not contain carrier oils.
