Blue Tansy Essential Oil Uses

Blue Tansy oil (Tanacetum annuum)  is not to be confused with Tansy oil  (Tanacetum vulgare), which  is toxic and should never  be used in aromatherapy. Blue Tansy is a great oil for aromatherapy, fortunately. Some people refer to it as "Moroccan Chamomile" though that isn't entirely accurate.  It has a bright, floral candy scent to it. It's interesting to me that like Blue Yarrow, this blue oil does not come from a blue flower. Intellectually I know why -- it's because the oil has azulene in it, which is what creates the blue color -- but it always makes me smile.

Combines Well With

Lavender, Ravintsara,  Pine, Cedarwood, Rosemary, Helichrysum

Points of Interest

  • Best use is for muscles and skin care.
  • The blue oil might stain fabric, so when using in a massage, wipe off excess and be mindful when you put clothes back on.
  • Because Blue Tansy has similar properties to the Chamomiles, as well as a similar looking plant, it has sometimes been called "Blue Chamomile," but that name is not correct. If you see a reference to "Blue Chamomile" in a recipe somewhere, it is very likely a reference to Blue Tansy.
  • This oil is a very peaceful oil.
  • Works really well for skin care. While the azulene is what makes the oil blue, it also is known for skin care properties. Because it is blue in color, be prepared for it to change the color of any recipes you put together. Especially if you put it in white or cream colored lotions.
  • Inhale the scent and see how it makes you feel. That's a great way to get started.

Muscle Massage
  • 3 drops Blue Tansy
  • 5 drops Helichrysum italicum
  • 1 teaspoon Vitamin E oil
  • 2 teaspoons F.C.O. (Fractionated Coconut Oil)
Massage into desired targeted area as often as needed.
Calming Massage
  • 3 drops Blue Tansy
  • 2 drops Lavender
  • 2 drops Fir Needle
  • 1 tablespoon Carrier oil
Massage into shoulders, upper back, and neck.  Can also diffuse, without the carrier oil.
