21 Essential Oils for Skin Care Aromatherapy

When it comes to growing older, we find our skin losing its elasticity and gaining wrinkles. It loses its brilliance and it gets harder to keep it hydrated and healthy. But don’t worry, there is hope! This is the section on using essential oils for skin, especially for mature skin. Mature skin tends to become drier. Character lines start to show, though they aren’t always appreciated. The body normally produces hormones that keep the skin supple and radiant and these hormones decrease as we get older.

The skin produces less and less natural moisturizers. While it varies from one person to the next when your skin starts to show age, it is never too soon to start preventative measures. Sensitive skin is often a result of harsh conditions — commercial soaps, too much sun, certain cosmetic materials, etc. You’ll want to use gentle essential oils for skin like the Chamomiles, Lavender, Neroli, and Rose and pay attention to how they make you feel.

Best Essential Oils for Skin Care

  • Essential oils: Carrot Seed, Cucumber Seed, Sandalwood, Frankincense, Lavender, Myrrh, Neroli, Patchouli, Rose, Fennel Seed, Galbanum, Thyme, German Chamomile, Lemon, Red Mandarin, Rosemary, Palmarosa, Lime, Jasmine, Helichrysum italicum, Bergamot FCF
  • Carrier oils: Olive, Apricot Kernel

Points of interest

  1. When cleaning your skin, use the types of cleaners that fit with your skin type — oily, dry, or normal. You may have to adjust as time goes by.
  2. A quick and easy way to help rejuvenate your skin is to take a capsule of Vitamin E, break it open and smooth the oil into your skin at night before going to bed.


Always test on a small part of your skin first before using all over your face or body. Please be sure your skin can handle the blend before being covered in it.

Creamy Scrub Cleanser

  • 1/4 small, ripe Peach, peeled
  • 1 tablespoon Cream, light or heavy
  • 1 tablespoon Ground Oatmeal
  • 1 teaspoon Sunflower Seed meal
  • 1 teaspoon Olive oil
  • 1 drop Roman Chamomile oil
  • 2 drops Carrot Seed

Mash peach until smooth. Mix all ingredients together with the peach to form a very creamy paste. If too thin, add more ground oats; if too thick, add more cream. Allow to thicken 1 minute. Massage scrub into face and throat. Allow the mixture to remain on your face for approximately 5 minutes. Rinse with warm water. Follow with a moisturizer.

Gentle Exfoliating Scrub

  • 1 cup Ground Oatmeal
  • 1/2 cup Powdered Milk (whole or nonfat is fine)
  • 2 teaspoons Cornmeal
  • 8 drops Carrot Seed oil
  • 4 drops Cucumber Seed
  • Filtered Water

Mix all dry ingredients and add essential oil. Put in a 16 ounce container with a lid. Close lid tightly. Let sit for 24 hours before using. Combine 1 tablespoon of scrub with enough filtered water to make a thick paste. Gently massage in circular motions over your face and neck. Rinse with warm water. Use 3 times a week.

Basic Facial Steam

  • 1 quart boiling water
  • 1 large handful of herbs (from above list)
  • 5 drops essential oil of choice (from above list)

Steep the herbs for 5 – 10 minutes, covered. Remove lid and add essential oils, leaving the herbs in the water. Use a towel to make a tent over the pot or bowl and steam your face for up to 10 minutes. Strain the herbs and save the tea to use as a final rinse water at the end of facial.

Toner for Dry or Mature Skin

  • 2 ounces Aloe Vera Juice
  • 2 ounces Orange Blossom Water
  • 1 teaspoon Calendula-infused Vinegar
  • 2 drops Helichrysum italicum
  • 2 drops Cucumber Seed
  • 800 IU Vitamin E oil

Combine the ingredients and shake well before every use.

Fennel Seed and Honey Toner

  • 2 tablespoons Witch Hazel
  • 1 drop Fennel Seed oil
  • 1 drop Lavender oil
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons Honey

Combine and store in a clean jar. Can use full strength or diluted with 2 tablespoons Distilled Water. Great for smoothing and tightening skin.


Wash face thoroughly. Apply formula with a cotton ball to face and allow to dry before you apply a moisturizer.

Skin Moisturizer

  • 10 drops Myrrh
  • 10 drops Palmarosa
  • 5 drops Frankincense
  • 5 drops Sandalwoods
  • 1 tablespoon Borage oil
  • 1 tablespoon Flaxseed oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon Vitamin E oil

Combine all ingredients into a dark colored, glass bottle. Wash skin thoroughly and massage a portion of the formula into your skin. Apply daily.

Mature Skin Moisturizer

Combine all ingredients into a dark colored, glass bottle. Wash skin thoroughly and massage a portion of the formula into your skin. Apply daily.

Facial Moisturizer

Apply entire formula to face and massage gently using upward strokes. Use around eyes as close as you can tolerate it.

Eye Moisturizer

  • 1 tablespoon Cocoa Butter
  • 1 tablespoon Lanolin
  • 1 teaspoon Wheatgerm oil
  • 1 capsule Evening Primrose oil
  • 1 drop Rosemary oil

Place the cocoa butter, lanolin, and wheatgerm oil in a double boiler. Melt ingredients together over a very low heat for 15 minutes. When they have melted, add the essential oil and remove from heat, stirring frequently. Transfer to a sterile jar and cover when cool. Put a dab of cream on each middle finger and massage them around the eye sockets, working over then under the eyes, from the inside to the outside. (Don't put on eyelid.) Leave to absorb overnight.
